$5,000 Goal

Since 1980 COAR, the Community of Oscar A. Romero, has been serving the destitute and displaced children of El Salvador. Known as "The COAR Children's Village" it is the oldest organization in the world to bear St. Romero's name. COAR began as a war orphanage begun by some members of the Cleveland Latin American Mission Team and the sacrifices of the martyrs of 1980: St. Romero, Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Ms. Jean Donovan. Throughout the civil war of the 1980's, the destitution of the 1990's, and now the violence of the gangs, COAR has housed, fed, healed, educated, and loved thousands of Salvadoran children. COAR is also a beacon and refuge of safety from daily gang threats and extortion for the children who live there in foster care, as well as the 1,000 students (pre-K-12th) that attend our school. We maintain this refuge through a dedicated staff, excellent education and health care, strong facilities with gates, walls, and security guards, and a spiritual center with St. Romero as a model.
You can follow St. Romero's injunction to be "the voice of the voiceless" and alleviate suffering by supporting this refuge for children in El Salvador.

THIS YEAR...

All funds raised during Giving Tuesday will go toward reconstructing and improving the computer center at COAR Children's Village. It was flooded during Tropical Storm Alberto in June and the heavy rains also exacerbated damage to the foundation of the structure. The computer center is such an integral part of life at COAR that it will need to be repaired and updated in 2025.

Who We Are

The COAR Peace Mission is a lay charity of the Diocese of Cleveland and a 501c3 designated charity.  Since 1985 COAR Peace Mission has gathered the support of thousands of supporters from North America and beyond to provide 100% of the support for the COAR Children's Village.  Our three employees are housed at the Diocese's Center for Pastoral Leadership.  In addition to stewarding donations we organize service trips to El Salvador, connect donors to the children through a sponsorship program, participate in the Mission Co-operative Plan of the Catholic Church, and regularly communicate with Archbishop Escobar of the Archdiocese of San Salvador to make sure we are working towards his goals for his people.  CHECK OUT OUR ANNUAL ST. ROMERO DAY PRAYER SERVICE, LIVE STREAMED IN MARCH.
