Joseph & Mary's Home

Joseph & Mary’s Home, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, is the only medical respite in Northeast Ohio for adults experiencing homelessness.

The men and women referred to 2302 Community College Avenue are experiencing acute medical conditions - cancer, surgery, diabetes, COPD, etc. - that have led to repeated emergency room visits or hospitalization. Often times they are facing multiple significant health concerns at once, including both physical and behavioral health diagnoses. 

They have no stable housing situation to go to so they can rest and recover. 

That is why Joseph & Mary's Home is so integral in the continuum of care.

Every man and woman at Joseph & Mary's Home deserves the opportunity to heal and achieve independence.

Joseph & Mary's Home helps 21 people at a time – 11 men, 10 women – be restored to good health while being treated with dignity and respect. 

Each resident has his/her own room, with three meals a day provided. Staff members are on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 

Along with providing a safe, comforting environment, the staff - which not only includes a medical director and nurse, but also a community health worker, licensed social worker, case manager, peer recovery supporters and resident support assistants – is committed to helping residents achieve better health outcomes as well as a return to living independently in their own homes. With their help, residents:

• Review care plans and better understand their medication and treatments. 
• Receive transportation to critical appointments.
• Become connected with resources to renew their IDs and have access to cell phones.
• Identify possible housing vouchers and submit housing applications.
• Talk about everything from budgeting to healthy coping skills. 
• Restore not just their health, but their hope for a better tomorrow. 

The goal is always two-fold: back to health, forward to housing. 

In 2024, Joseph & Mary's Home served 101 residents and 42 alumni. This year, 89% of resident alumni remained medically stable after leaving Joseph & Mary’s Home, while 83% remained in stable housing.
