Who We Are: Newman Campus Ministry at the University of Akron
RooCatholic is part of our Diocesan Ministry!
The mission of Newman Catholic Campus Ministry is to gather students attending non-Catholic colleges and universities in the Diocese of Cleveland in order to strengthen their faith and Catholic identity through:
- Participation in a worshiping community of faith
- Increased understanding of Catholic teaching & tradition
- Education, action, and reflection on peace and justice issues
- Leadership development
- Opportunities for personal development and spiritual formation
The RooCatholic Program strives to:
- Offer a gathering place for students to meet and share their faith identity
- Provide students with faith-formation and community-building opportunities through:
- Weekly Newman Nights on faith topics of interest
- Sunday Evening Student Mass
- Communal prayer opportunities
- Bible Studies and faith-sharing groups
- Social activities, including “Catholic Crunch” and other informal gatherings to build community
- Provide students an opportunity to offer service to those in need through:
- St. Bernard Meal Ministry Programs
- The Peter Maurin Center
- St. Mary Akron School Tutoring
- Immersion Experiences
- In conjunction with St. Bernard and neighboring parishes, RooCatholic has served as an integral partner in the faith formation through the annual OCIA Faith Formation Program.
- Our goal is to underwrite costs for students attending SEEK 26, a 5-day experience, where thousands of Catholics come together to encounter Christ through prayer, Adoration, the sacraments, and inspiring speakers. This has been a transformative, life-changing experience for many of our students, and we look forward to offering this opportunity again, which will take place January 1st-5th in Columbus, Ohio.
