Addressing social drivers of community health in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood and beyond

The Neighborhood Need

Cleveland’s Central neighborhood and its nearly 12,000 residents face any number of inherent challenges—including generational trauma, poverty and violence. Addressing the most critical needs of residents and the surrounding area is a priority for the St. Vincent Charity Health & Healing Hub.

  • 70% of neighborhood residents live below the poverty line
  • $10,000 median household income (family of five)
  • 80% of children live below the poverty line

The Health & Healing Vision

The St. Vincent Charity Health & Healing Hub, a neighborhood legacy initiative of the Sisters of Charity Health System, will serve as a hub for the community, offering comprehensive programming and services to address the most critical needs. This initiative will continue to serve the neighborhood of the former St. Vincent Charity Medical Center, located on a seven-acre campus in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood at East 22nd Street and Community College Avenue—carrying on a legacy that began in 1865.

Key program areas to address social drivers of health include:

  • Basic needs
  • Academic success
  • Family engagement
  • Health care
  • Socio-economic mobility

The Hub will also serve as a home for the Sr. Ignatia Gavin Center for Addiction Medicine, where the renowned Rosary Hall addiction medicine program will provide outpatient treatment for people with substance use disorders.

Your Gift Builds a Healthier Central

Partners are being identified, input is being gathered and new facilities are being planned. A formal phase 1 launch of the Health & Healing Hub is anticipated in 2026.

But work is already underway to meet basic needs, cultivate socio-economic mobility, boost academic success and support family engagement.

Your support will help to accelerate neighborhood transformation by providing K-8 students at Marion Sterling School with:

  • Tutoring, mentoring, out of school time programming as well as literacy and social-emotional wellness interventions to boost academic achievement
  • Urban agriculture incorporation into the classroom and beyond to build knowledge of nutrition and develop entrepreneurial skills
  • Student savings accounts to incentivize attendance and build financial literacy

Additionally, you will help families throughout Central by providing:

  • The "Junior Chef" after school program which instills appreciation for healthy eating habits as well the ability to cook for oneself and others
  • A Parent Cafe program where parents are equipped to face parenting challenges in healthy ways for themselves and their children
  • A Teen Cafe program that helps teens to broaden their horizons and develop a vision for growth and a fulfilling future

More programs will launch in the coming months to nurture strong families, enhance access to healthy food and healthcare, address housing and infrastructure challenges, and make academic and career success attainable.

Your gift of any amount will help Central children and families overcome the challenges that lead to cyclical poverty and poor health outcomes. Thank you for your interest in this mission of healing - and for your generous support!
